Writer at work.

Interested in being a writer or a better writer, or, better yet, getting paid for your writing? Good. I think everyone should aspire to be the best writer they can be. And I’d like to share some hopefully useful, encouraging, and entertaining thoughts on writing and the writing process.

Nowadays, communicator might be a more accurate term than writer. Down the road I will have things to say about communicatoring, as in the use of video or slide decks. (I know communicatoring ain’t a word, but…) Yes, I also have things to say about unconventional uses of language.

My thoughts on the writing life are organized roughly around what I used to call six easy steps to improve your writing back when I used to give a presentation I rather unimaginatively titled Writers Rule the World:

  1. Plan your writing process.
  2. Get your head around your message.
  3. Define any terms your reader might not know.
  4. Use standard language as much as possible (I will give you the world’s shortest English language grammar course.)
  5. Don’t be afraid to use pictures.
  6. Get a second opinion.

I promise to flesh out these points with an occasional story of the writing life. I believe a good story, like a good picture, can take the place of a thousand other words.

Remember, even if it seems rather trite to say it, writers do have a tendency to rule the world. Check it out.
